Lecture and Performance | The Flower of Caledonia

The second half of the eighteenth century saw a blossoming of the arts, philosophy, and science in Scotland. Known as the Scottish Enlightenment, its influence spread throughout England and the rest of Europe. The poetry of Robert Burns and the traditional songs and dances of Scotland became very fashionable. The publisher George Thomson commissioned Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven, among others, to make arrangements of Scottish folk songs. Haydn knew William Hunter’s younger brother, John, and John’s wife, Anne, and they maintained a close friendship. Haydn set fourteen of Anne’s poems to music. This lecture and concert, presented in conjunction with the Center’s current exhibition on William Hunter, will explore some of this music as well as touch upon the relationships that formed in both William’s and John’s circle.
