Los Angeles Times: “Review: Philharmonia Baroque delivers Handel and myth for our sexually fluid, #MeToo times”

“Over the last 35 years, Nicholas McGegan has made the Bay Area’s Philharmonia Baroque into America’s premier early music ensemble in part through his attention to Handel’s dramatic works. Now in his outgoing season, he has outdone himself with a stupendously sung and profoundly disquieting “Aci” in a 170-seat experimental space, ODC Theater, here in the Mission District.” Read more on Los Angeles Times.

Operawire: “Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale 2020 Review: Aci, Galatea e Polifemo”

“Under Nicholas McGegan’s expert baton, the Philharmonia Baroque Chamber Players’ and producers Anthony Roth Costanzo and Cath Brittan and Brooklyn’s National Sawdust gave a wondrous performance of the score in San Francisco, after years of artistic planning.” Read more on Operawire.

American Handel Society: “A Cosmic Notion”

“The 2019/2020 season marks the 34th and final year of AHS Honorary Board Member Nicholas McGegan’s tenure as Music Director of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale. During that time the ensemble has performed more works by Handel than by any other composer, beginning with Acis and Galatea in February 1985 and including memorable performances of Theodora with Lorraine Hunt Lieberson in the title role and 50 performances of Messiah. Nic has also led the group in significant recordings of the latter two works, as well as of Susanna, Joseph and His Brethren, and Judas Maccabaeus.” Read more at the Newsletter of The American Handel Society.
